DAT Financial & Tax ServiceE-File - Electronic Filing of Tax Returns
Frequently Asked QuestionsI always want to offer you every available tool to save time and money so I invested in state-of-the-art technology and training that provides my clients the option of electronic filing. Many accountants still do not offer this service. Over the years, more and more of my clients have requested e-filing for the ease, convenience and quick electronic deposits of their tax refunds. If you haven’t e-filed before, you may have some questions, which I’ve tried to cover here. If you have any more questions, please let me know when we meet for your tax appointment. What do I gain by e-filing? Fast refunds, electronic payments, accuracy, security. The IRS notifies me within 48 hours that your return was accepted and I send you an acknowledgement that I receive from them. Your chance of receiving an error notice is reduced. Your tax return is transmitted from my computer to the server to the IRS. Your federal and state returns may be filed together. Do I really get my refund faster? You get it back in half the usual time. It’s even faster and safer if you have your refund deposited directly to your bank account. I give you an estimated date for the direct deposit and most clients are finding it to be accurate. Is e-filing an option? Starting in 2010, the IRS requires all returns prepared by our office to be e-filed. If I owe taxes, how do I pay my taxes electronically? You can authorize a direct debit (automatic withdrawal) from your back account at the time your electronic tax return is prepared. You can also e-pay by credit card. You can also pay your taxes by check by the due date for the return, even if you e-file earlier in the year. How can I pay my taxes by credit card? Credit card payments must be made electronically. You can e-file and e-pay by credit card or you can pay by phone (800-2PAY-TAX or 888-ALLTAXX, toll free) or Internet (www.officialpayments.com or www.about1888ALLTAXX.com) using a Discover Card, American Express Card or MasterCard Card. You can make partial payments by phone or Internet, but there is a limit to the maximum number of payments for each tax type. You will be provided a confirmation number at the end of the payment transaction and your credit card statement will provide confirmation of your electronic payment. Is there a fee charged for using my credit card? The company that processes the credit card payment charges a convenience fee. You are informed of the amount before you authorize payment. This fee is in addition to any charges, such as interest, that may be assessed by your credit card issuer. What happens if I e-file, am owed a tax refund, but owe taxes from previous years? The amount owed on back taxes is automatically deducted from your refund just as if you filed a paper return. What if there is an error on my return? If the IRS detects any errors (most common is mismatch of taxpayer or dependent names with Social Security numbers), it sends a message back to me indicating the error. I can make the change and retransmit the return to the IRS. If you have provided incorrect information for your return, the IRS or FTB may catch those errors at a later date. Do I have a greater chance of getting audited by the IRS if I e-file? No. The chance of an audit of an e-filed return is no greater than with a paper return. Does the State of California accept e-filed returns? Yes, I can file your taxes electronically with the Franchise Tax Board. |
